Wilayat of Al Qabil

Wilayat of Al Qabil

The Wilayat of Al Qabil is one of the Wilayats of North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. It is bordered to the north by the Wilayat of Ibra, to the south by the Wilayat of Bidiyah and to the west by the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi. It has adopted the saddled horse as its emblem. It has about 69 archaeological landmarks, the most important of which are a fort in Al Qabil and another in Al Mudhairib. It is distinguished by about 50 aflaj, the most important being the aflaj of Al Mudhairib, Al Qabil, Al Duraiz and Al Naba. It is also known for a number of villages lying among high golden sand dunes, the most important being Saqah, Al Aqidah, Al Khurais and Al Jawfa. The Wilayat also has a number of springs, most notably Ain Marzouq, known for its mineral water, Ain Wadi Barakah and Ain Al Washal. The aflaj, springs and villages set among the sand dunes are among the tourist attractions of the Wilayat of Al Qabil. The Wilayat of Al Qabil is one of the symbols of Oman's deep-rooted history and is therefore distinguished by its ancient heritage; the forts, castles and towers with which the Wilayat abounds are the best testimony to its standing. It lies in the eastern part of North Al Sharqiyah Governorate on the main road between the cities of Muscat and Sur, and is bordered to the east by the Wilayat of Wadi Bani Khalid, to the south by the Wilayat of Bidiyah, to the north by the Wilayat of Ibra, to the north-east by the Wilayat of Dima Wa Al Taiyyin and to the west by the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi. The Wilayat is characterised by diverse terrain, ranging from sand dunes to towering mountains and low-lying wadis. The Wilayat is also distinguished by its ancient heritage and old historic buildings, as well as towers built hundreds of years ago, which retain their standing and grandeur and still stand firm, defying the passage of time, erosion and the terrain.
